What is a Headache?

A headache is a condition that is characterized by pain or discomfort in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches are divided into two groups: primary and secondary headaches.

Primary Headache: Primary headaches are “idiopathic,” meaning that they occur for no obvious reason and are not the result of an underlying disease. Primary headaches are triggered by lifestyle factors, such as alcohol, skipped meals, poor posture, stress, and lack of sleep.

Secondary Headache: A secondary headache is a symptom of an underlying disease or condition, such as sinusitis, dehydration, influenza, or a concussion. Secondary headaches will not subside until the root cause is diagnosed and addressed.

Common Headaches

Tension Headaches: Also called chronic daily headaches, tension headaches are the most common form of primary headaches in adults and adolescents. Tension headaches vary in severity and duration.

Cluster Headaches: Although less common, cluster headaches are the most severe type of primary headache. Cluster headaches are characterized by a grouping of painful attacks during a “cluster period,” which can last anywhere from two weeks to three months.

Migraines: Migraines cause moderate to severe pain marked by an intense throbbing or pulsing sensation in one area of the head. Migraines are typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and severe sensitivity to light and sound.
